Mindy McCready Sex Tape and the PR Stunt

Here we go again. Another CD release, another sex tape faux-scandal publicity campaign. And Fox News has taken the bait with an exclusive story.

Troubled country starlet Mindy McCready is attempting to mount a comeback in conjunction with the release of her first CD in 8 years. The comeback comes on the heels of a well-timed sex tape that happens to have fallen into the hands of a porn production company.

McCready is the former mistress of retired pitcher Roger Clemens. So her sex tape is aptly titled Baseball Mistress--the porn industry has never been subtle with its titles, but this one lacks the humor value of most.

In a surprise move, her lawyer has requested documentation that would prove the porn production company's right to publish the video.

Let me see if I can guess what comes next: the lawyer and the porn producer will wage a pitched battle in the press seeking as much ink as possible; they will waste some judge's time (0r not); they will reach an undisclosed out-of-court agreement (or not); the tape will be released, it will make a profit; and people will buy McCready's CD.

Everyone wins. Everyone except western civilization.

This is all the stuff of unconscious, unawakened, unaware sensibilities. The only effective response is non-reaction. Anything else--negative or positive--would only serve to inflate the egos (and bank accounts) of those involved.

Is it a mark of the evolution of our society that this marketing tactic has become humdrum? Perhaps so, if we can collectively extend our non-reaction to a spontaneous boycott of all three products: the CD, the sex tape and Fox News.

I'm pretty sure better examples of all three are out there.
